Week 17; Discrimination Against Pregnant Women

In our world today, there is every type of discrimination. Buisness are discriminating against pregnant women because they will only be working for a short time. Also, these women cannot do hard work for safety reasons. Companies will usually pay the women less. Buisness usually do not hire women who are pregnant because of the amount of time off that they need for doctors visits and maturnity leave. Companies cannot ask a women if she is expecting or planning on expecting.

In my opinion, I feel it is unfair for the women, but also for the buisness. A buisness can not depend on someone who always needs time off. It will eventually hurt the buisness becuase of the constant days off. In my opinion i feel both sides are unfair. If a company really feels they like the expecting mother, they will keep her through maturnity leave.

Week 15: Teen Suspended For Going to Prom

Tyler Frost, a 17-year-old, attending Heritage Christian School, was suspended and prohibited from going to graduation due to going to his girlfriends prom. Frost signed a contract forbidding dancing, rock music, and holding hands. Frost was warned that if her went to prom with his girlfriend he would get suspended. Frost went to prom, and was suspended from his Baptist school.

I feel that his high school should have business where he goes to prom. There is also no reason that he should have had to sign an agreement for holding hands and rock music. A school is allowed to control that under their own policy, but they shouldn't have had a say in whether he would get suspended for going to prom. There is a lot of worse things a student could do than to go to prom with rock music. I feel that it is not right for his school to forbid him from graduating because of this incident.

Week 15: Swine Flu Pandemic

Just yesterday the Swine Flu has reached phase 5 making it a pandemic. The swine flu is a type of influenza that originated from swine (pigs). Just in the US, there has been 109 cases of the flu. New York has 50 cases and Texas has 26. There has been one death in Texas of an infant. There have been 160 deaths in Mexico, the virus is believed to have spread to 2,498 people.

In my opinion, the government and state officials should have acted much sooner on this growing flu. By March 9, the first symptoms were showing up in the Mexico. If we would have realized how contagious this is, there would have been many more precautions made. With this rising flu, the only thing we can do is wash our hands and not shake hands with other people. we must be extremely careful about what we touch.

Week 14 Paraguayan President

Recent news has come out that Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo admitted he fathered a child when he was still a Roman Catholic bishop. He had served 10 years as a bishop, and during those years he had a child. The child is two years old now. As for what the church thinks, the Vatican first rejected him for layman's status, by suspending him from priestly duties. They went on saying that, in fact, he was still a bishop because ordination is a lifelong sacrament seen by the church.

In my opinion, since he had an affair during his reign as a bishop, he should be excommunicated from the church. The church preaches abstinence, and bishops are a voice in the church, he is going against the church. While a bishops personal life and church life should be seperate, he has gone against the church. I don't think anyone wants to have a bishop who preaches then doesn't follow it.

Week 12: What would you do?

The "What Yould You Do?" show puts people into difficult situations to see how they will react. One of them showed a gay couple eating in a restaurant. The couple showed some affection for each other, and made some people upset. Most of the people were quiet until another actor started to voice his opinion. Some people said they didn't mind while others said it was inappropriate. But once the person did agree it was wrong, when the cameras came out he said he had no problem with the situation. This person changed his mind in front of the cameras.

I think this conflict is a big problem. There are more homosexual people in the world than there used to be. I think this problem is taken out of hand in our state because we don't see many gay people around. I also think even though they are around, they try to hide the fact that they are gay so they won't get made fun of. I think people need to change their outlook on gay people because if someone close to you is gay, you probably wouldn't make fun of them. The problem is that this is now becoming the "norm" and you can't stop it. People need to not blame people for their sexuality because there is no changing it.

Week 11; What would you do?

The what would you do show has put people into difficult situations to see how they will react. One experiment showed a woman fall down in the middle of the street. Within 6 seconds someone goes and gets help for her. Then the experiment changes to a man. This man also collapsed and it didnt take that long for anyone to help. The last experiment showed a man who appeared homeless. He then fell and had a beer in his hand. No one helped this man at first. Finally a woman, who has been homeless helps the man, she asked people to call 911, but no one really listens to her.

I hope in this situation I would act like this woman. It doesnt matter who has collapsed, they need help. This experiment made me realize that people dont step up and help people. The sad part was that this had happened in real life. A homeless man was beaten and it took someone an hour before someone called the police, by that time, the man had died. I believe I would have helped the person if I was ever confronted in this situation. I also hope that if i every collapsed, that someone would help me. This experiment really showed that people may think of helping the person, but may never do it.

Schools Allowing Cage Fights Week 10

It has just been put out on the news that South Oak Cliff Highschool in Dallas Texas encourages their kids to cage fight. The report went on saying that its a great way to let the kids get their anger out. These fights have been going on from, 2003-2005. The principal and employees knew this situation had been going on, let it happen, and didnt report it. One of the former counsellors at the high school said:"It was gladiator-style entertainment for the staff.”
I think this is setting a horrible example for the childeren. These kids fighting are getting pressured to fight. With the principal, teachers, and class mates all screaming and cheering, this is a horrible example. Schools are supposed to set good examples for their students. With teaching these kids to cage might, it may make these kids fight without supervision. Why couldnt the school teach karate or tae kwon do. These sports seem safer, and teach morals. I feel any adult involved in this act should be penalized.
